Architect Jacinto Higueras (1877-1954) received in 1909 his first significant order : a commemorative monument to two major battles fought in the Province of Jaén, which are illustrated on its socle : the 1212 Batalla de las Navas de Tolosa (on the West), and the 1808 Batalla de Bailén (<► File:Jaén – Monumento a las Batallas – Bailén 1808.jpg) (on the East). A bronze statue of Athena-Nike, goddess of Victory, tops the column. The Monument was inaugurated on October 20, 1912.
